What is the Travelling Gavel ?
The Travelling Gavel is a gavel plaque, used to encourage clubs to visit one another, learn from one another, and support one another towards achieving success - all in a spirit of fun and comaraderie.

How does the Challenge work?
All clubs in the district are invited to try to “capture” the travelling gavel from the host club.

Travelling Gavel Rules 2011-2012
- The gavel can be captured at regular meetings of the host club.
- Clubs hosting the gavel must meet at their regular meeting times.
- Clubs must meet at least two times per month to qualify to capture the gavel.
- A club cannot capture the gavel from the club that has just captured the gavel from it.  (If Club 1 captures from Club 2, Club 2 cannot capture from Club 1 until at least one other club has captured the gavel in-between.)
- To capture the gavel, a minimum of 3 members of the capturing club must attend the capture, except when the distance between the host club and the capturing club is greater than 100 km; in that case, only one member of the capturing club is required to attend.
- Both the gavel and the journey book must travel together, even if the host club has not completed their journal entry.
- Both the gavel and the journey book must be surrendered to the capturing club at the end of the meeting at which the gavel was captured.
- All disputes will be resolved by the Lieutenant Governor Education and Training.

What happens if more than one qualifying club shows up to capture the gavel?
Ideally, clubs will call ahead, so only one gavel challenger will show up at a time.
The host club will schedule a challenge only with the first club that contacts them.
If no clubs contact them in advance, the club with the largest percentage of its paid membership present wins the challenge and takes the gavel home.
If both clubs have the same percentage of paid membership present, the decision will by made by a coin toss!

What do we do after we capture the gavel?
Contact the gavel guardian, Nancy Kleiman ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or phone 475-3271),
with the following information:
- Name and club number of the capturing club,
- Date, time, and location of meetings of the capturing club,
- Contact name and phone # for the capturing club,
- Date of capture, and
- Number of members at the capture,
so we can broadcast the location of the gavel, and keep it travelling.

Take a picture or pictures of the gavel with your Club.  The gavel loves to go to meetings so take a picture of the gavel at a meeting, chairing a meeting or out for the evening with your group.  Send the pictures to the gavel guardian (Nancy) so that they can be shown at the District meeting and on the Districts' Facebook site (if you do not wish the picture to be posted on the District Facebook site please indicate this when sending the above information to the gavel guardian).

How often does the gavel have to move?
If the gavel is not captured by the next district meeting or event following the capture, the gavel must be surrendered at the very next district meeting or event (i.e., the 2nd district meeting), to get it back into circulation.

This gavel is very restless and is continually looking for a new home.
Is your club the next home for the gavel?
